Reflections from a Pastor's Farm Childhood

Rev. Bob Lehrer
Saint Paul Area Synod
At my age, it seems that my mind wanders back to my childhood more than it used to. Those were simpler times. There were no computers, smart phones, or cars those can almost drive themselves. The farms were maybe a quarter mile apart, and where I grew up, usually had both crops and livestock. I remember the cows running freely in fenced pasture land and I remember crops being rotated from one year to the next. I remember the sweet smell of manure used as fertilizer for the fields. And I remember cover crops like alfalfa.
So what has happened between that time and the present. What is the future of agriculture? And what can we do as stewards of the land and soil that God has given to us all? These and many other questions will be discussed and pondered as we gather online for another Eco-Faith Summit this spring. March 26th is the date. A great lineup of speakers is being assembled and plans are being made for small groups, as well as worship and music. I very much look forward to participating and to interacting with many of you.
The ancient Israelites were promised a land of milk and honey when their perilous journey through the desert was over. I believe God still gives promises to us. I believe that a land with renewed hope awaits us at the end of our journey, even if some of us don't live to see it. That is why we gather together and work, pray, and act. God has created us in His image and given us dominion over his creation (Genesis 1:26). That means we are to care for it as God himself would care for it.
It is an awesome calling but it is a calling for which none of us are left to ourselves. We have each other, and we have many others in this world who live by this calling. And yes, I believe the Holy Spirit is with us today as He has always been in years past.
